How to Move to Another State

Interstate moving checklist

Start six to eight weeks before the move when possible. Build one written inventory, compare at least three estimates, and keep every estimate, order of service, bill of lading, inventory sheet, and payment receipt together.

1. Confirm that the move is interstate. A household-goods move between states is generally covered by federal consumer-protection rules.
2. Verify the mover or broker. Check its legal name, U.S. DOT number, operating authority, insurance information, and complaint history using FMCSA resources.
3. Compare complete written estimates. Confirm whether each estimate is binding or non-binding and whether packing, stairs, elevators, long carries, storage, or shuttle service cost extra.
4. Read before signing. Do not sign blank or incomplete documents. Make sure pickup and delivery windows, addresses, services, valuation choice, and contact information are correct.
5. Protect important property. Carry identification, medicines, financial records, keys, irreplaceable documents, and small valuables yourself. Tell the mover in writing about high-value items.
6. Document condition. Photograph furniture and electronics before loading, review the mover's inventory at pickup, and note visible damage before signing at delivery.

Before moving day

• Confirm parking, elevator reservations, building access, and loading restrictions at both addresses.
• Update utilities, insurance, employer records, schools, vehicle registration, and mailing address on the schedule required by each organization.
• Keep the mover's dispatch contact, driver's contact, shipment number, and delivery window available offline.
