How to verify a DOT number before freight changes hands

A USDOT number on a text message is not verification. Match official FMCSA records to the company you think you are dealing with.

What a USDOT number is

A USDOT number identifies a company in FMCSA systems. It is not a guarantee of insurance quality, cargo security, or honest people on the other end of the phone. Treat it as a starting key for public records.

Step-by-step check (free)

  1. Get the number and legal name from the rate confirmation, email domain, or profile—not only a text.
  2. Open FMCSA SAFER Company Snapshot and search by USDOT or name: safer.fmcsa.dot.gov/CompanySnapshot.aspx.
  3. Match legal name and address to the documents you were given. Mismatches are a stop sign.
  4. Check operating status and whether the company shows as active for the work they claim.
  5. Review authority and insurance pointers using official licensing & insurance tools when applicable: FMCSA L&I public search.
  6. Call the company number listed on official records if something feels off—not only the cell that texted the load.
  7. On pickup day, match driver, truck, plate, and paperwork to what you verified.

Red flags

  • Payment or banking instructions change after acceptance.
  • Pressure to move off-platform or skip documents.
  • DOT number does not match the company name on the load offer.
  • Brand-new authority with high-value freight and urgency language.
  • Multiple conflicting phone numbers or email domains.

Shippers vs carriers

  • Shippers — Verify the carrier before releasing freight. A marketplace profile is not a substitute for SAFER.
  • Carriers — Verify the broker/shipper identity when the story or payment path changes.
